Immersion

The Southwestern Texas Synod promotes immersion experiences as opportunities for distinct communities to learn from each other, share meals, reflect, pray, serve together, and build solidarity.

There are currently two immersion experiences being hosted in our region that highlight the reality of life in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, educate about the immigration system, and invite groups to reflect how they can honor the humanity and dignity of immigrants.

Eagle Pass Immersion Program

Iglesia Luterana San Lucas and Eagle Pass Frontera Ministries invite you on an immersion experience that will transform you and cultivate our collective commitment to co-creating a more just world that reflects the love of our God.

The purpose of the Eagle Pass Immersion Program is to:

  • Foster a deep understanding of life at the U.S.–Mexico border
  • Listen to the stories and voices of local communities, faith leaders, and migrants
  • Cultivate a spirit of solidarity, respect, and justice
  • Invite critical reflection from our Lutheran faith on migration, accompaniment, and radical hospitality

Location: Eagle Pass, TX

Cost: $150 per person per day

Project Radical Hospitality Border Experience

In collaboration with FEA Foundation Ministries, UT-RGV School of Social Work, Grace Lutheran Church (Harlingen) and St. John Lutheran Church (San Juan), we invite you to experience immigration realities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) by

  • exploring the commonalities of your familial immigrant history with that of today’s immigrants.
  • reflecting on the push and pull factors that have influenced migration in recent years.
  • studying the intersectionality of our baptismal promises, Scripture, and rights provided by the U.S. Constitution and legal precedent.
  • visiting RGV individuals and institutions who have and continue to work with immigrants.
  • identifying opportunities and threats within immigration today.
