New Government & Civic Engagement Social Statement

New Government & Civic Engagement Social Statement

What is important to you when you think about government? What about how the church and the state relate to each other?

A task force is at work on a new social statement about civics and faith, and it wants to hear from you. This social statement was requested by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. A key piece of this process is hearing from ELCA members about their priorities and perspectives.

Social statements establish the basis for the ELCA’s public voice and policy decisions. They also serve as a teaching tool to help people discern and discuss their views on an issue.

This month you can connect directly with the task force to let them know what’s important to you!

Join members of the ELCA social statement task force for an ELCA-wide virtual listening event. The event will introduce what social statements are and how they’re developed. Then, participants will have a chance to share with task force members directly in breakout groups. The main questions will be:

  • What themes, ideas or topics do you think the task force needs to talk about or consider for the social statement?
  • What is important for the task force to consider in creating an effective social statement?

There are two opportunities to participate:

Tuesday, May 24, 7-8:15 p.m. Central time
Wednesday, May 25, 7-8:15 p.m. Central time

Compensation Guidelines Information Meeting

Compensation Guidelines Information Meeting

The Compensation Guidelines Document is intended to be used as a tool for rostered leaders – pastors (Ministers of Word and Sacrament) and deacons (Ministers of Word and Service) -- and congregations as they work together in budgeting for the rostered leader’s compensation and benefits. This is a living document which will be re-evaluated annually.

Ministry is often thought of in terms of a rostered leader’s efforts on behalf of the members of a congregation. In the same way, the ministry of the laity includes the care of the rostered leader and the rostered leader’s family. This mutual concern for one another is a witness to what we believe and practice in the life of the church.

The Compensation Guidelines Team took into consideration the cost-of-living factors based on national and local economic conditions, demographics, and compensation in neighboring synods of our region. The team recognized that there are a variety of congregational settings and staffing arrangements throughout our synod. It is our synod’s hope that congregations will care for their rostered leaders in a manner that shows recognition for their education, their dedication to their calling, their skills, and the responsibilities that are placed upon them.

If you want to learn more about how this living document came to be, or have questions, come to an informational session either on Tuesday, May 31st at 7 PM or Saturday, June 4th at 10 AM. Register HERE.

Building a Culture of Generosity Informational Session for Fall Cohort

May 25th at 9:00 am CST

Are you curious how your congregation can stabilize and grow financial giving? teach Biblical stewardship principles? help members discover generosity? and build a foundation for a generous culture? Our synod is partnering with Pastor Nathan Swenson-Reinhold of GSB Consulting to provide a fall cohort of Building a Culture of Generosity. This 6-session program is for congregations of any size, and the cost could be $0 for your congregation to participate. If you are even a little curious, Pastor Chris Steubing and Pastor Lisa Hoelscher hope you will attend the live informational session on May 25th to learn more about the fall cohort of Building a Culture of Generosity which will begin in late August. A recording will be available, too. Click below to see the flyer for full program details and to register to attend the live informational session (or receive the recording).
