Welcome to Synod Assembly 2018!

Pastor Jessica Cain and Pastor Caleb Jeffers are the co-chairs of the synod assembly planning team. We are excited to join with you for this year’s assembly. We have been working hard for many months to make this an event for learning, for fun, and for business. If this is your first time attending synod assembly, you have chosen an important year to serve as a voting member from your congregation. In addition to our regular business, his year, we will be electing a new bishop, who will serve a six-year term in our synod in addition to our regular business.
Perhaps you are wondering what synod assembly will be like. Certainly you have questions about your role, the schedule, and the goal of this time together. Hopefully you will find some of those answers here. If you have more questions, feel free to contact one of us.
In Christ,
Jessica Cain (        Caleb Jeffers (
Voting members from congregations around the synod, rostered leaders, synod staff, and some guests/presenters attend synod assembly. This year, we will have Sue Rothmeyer, Executive for Administration in the Office of the Secretary, as our churchwide representative.
If you have ever attended a congregational meeting in your home church, you have a sense of the goals of synod assembly.
First, it is important that we come together in various expressions of our church body for fellowship and worship. Each day of synod assembly, we will gather in worship; we will eat meals together. We will have times of discussion and just fun. As part of this wider experience of the church, we will hear from our churchwide representative about what is going on in the wider ELCA. We will hear from Bishop Tiemann and other synod leaders about the past year and goals for the years to come.
Second, synod assembly is for doing the business of the synod. We will pass a budget for 2019, and we will elect people to various roles in the synod. We will vote on any resolutions brought to the assembly for the sake of the synod. We will convene as the board of Cross Trails ministry. Finally, and taking the greatest amount of our time, we will elect a new bishop. This bishop’s term will begin in September and extend until August of 2024.

Synod assembly officially begins on the morning of Saturday, May 5, as we open the business of the assembly. We will complete all business no later 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 6. Saturday is a full day, but we will have breaks, as well as share lunch and an evening banquet together.
We encourage you to come on Friday evening if your schedule permits and spend the night on Friday as well as Saturday. There are some wonderful opportunities for fellowship outside of the official times of the assembly, especially on Saturday evening. If you arrive on Friday, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a casual Taize-style worship service. Please plan your weekend so that you will be able to attend assembly all day Saturday and Sunday, when the business of the synod is conducted.
The site for synod assembly moves each year, based on which of our conferences (smaller geographical divisions within the synod) is hosting. This year, the Cibolo Creek Conference is hosting at the San Marcos Convention Center. The Embassy Suites hotel is attached, and you can receive a discount on your room if you book by April 13. See the main assembly page for more information.
All of the assembly will take place in the convention center/hotel. We will have our business in one large room, worship in another, and meals in a third. On the first day of assembly, there will be plenty of people available to direct you to these rooms, which are located in a row.
Synod assembly is an important time for business but also to bring us together as a synod. Sometimes, we forget that our congregations are not alone, that we are part of a wider church body. We can’t wait to see you in San Marcos!
