Responsibilities

The chairperson of the Commission for Professional Leadership shall oversee the recruiting/ endorsing/supporting/approving of prospective candidates for the roster of ordained ministers, associates in ministry, deaconesses, and diaconal ministers; provide a system of support and education to those on the rosters; and provide a program for the training of lay leaders.

The commission is made up of the Candidacy Committee, Leadership Support Committee, Invitation to Service Committee, and the Parish Ministry Training Program. The chairperson convenes meetings of the commission at least twice annually, with special meetings as required, and coordinates the working of the commission’s various committees. He/she shall work closely with the bishop and other senior synod staff. The term officially begins September 1, 2010.

Skills/Abilities/Gifts

The following skills, abilities, and/or gifts are required for a person to effectively serve as chair of the Commission for Professional Leadership:

• Voting member of a congregation of the synod
• Ability and willingness to pray regularly for the ministry and congregations of the synod
• Ability to coordinate and oversee the work of the various committees
• Collaborate with the bishop and other senior staff on candidacy and roster issues
• Attendance at commission meetings and three Synod Council meetings annually
• Report regularly to Synod Council and Synod Assembly
• Good interpersonal skills
• Love of the church and its leaders, clergy and lay, rostered and unrostered
• Passion for continuing education for all the synod’s leaders
