Commission for Mission, Chairperson

Four-Year Term, Lay or Clergy

 

Responsibilities

The chairperson of the Commission for Mission guides the commission in the support of existing congregations, helping develop new ministries, being an advocate for inclusivity and ecumenicity in ministry, fostering Hispanic ministry throughout this synod, and promoting the global mission of the church.  The chairperson convenes meetings of the commission at least twice annually, with special meetings as required, and coordinates the workings of the commission’s various committees.

He/she will work closely with the Director for Evangelical Mission in these projects, as well as other senior staff members. Committees that are part of the Commission for Mission include the Campus Ministry Committee, Ecumenical Ministries Committee, Global Missions Committee, Inclusive/Multicultural Ministries Committee, Mission Partners Committee, and Outreach Committee. The term officially begins September 1, 2010.

 

Skills/Abilities/Gifts

The following skills, abilities, and/or gifts are required for a person to effectively serve as chair of the Commission for Mission:

  • Voting member of a congregation of the synod
  • Ability and willingness to pray regularly for the ministry and congregations of the synod
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee the work of the various committees
  • Collaborate with the Director for Evangelical Mission and other senior staff
  • Attendance at Commission meetings and three Synod Council meetings annually
  • Report regularly to Synod Council and Synod Assembly
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Communicates clearly
  • Passion for mission outreach
