Commission for Congregational Life (CCL)mission is to assist congregations in making disciples and developing leaders for mission. The commission has several committees, Book of Faith, Caring for God's Creation, Cherish Our Children, Church in Society, Disaster Response, Lutheran Men in Mission, Older Adult Ministry, Peace Not Walls, Poverty, School of Mission, Shared Ministry, Stewardship, Synod Library, Women of the ELCA, World Hunger and Youth Ministry.

The Commission for Congregational Life’s (CCL) mission is to assist congregations in making disciples and developing leaders for mission. Within the commission, there are several working groups, many of which are described briefly below.

Church in Society is a group that is responsible to lift up issues and resources related to topics such as health, poverty, disaster relief, peace, social statements, including the Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality and Palestine.

World Hunger

A major Task Force of the Stewardship Resource Team focuses on the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Task Force members work in a variety of areas to keep hunger issues before the people of this synod:
* Work with congregational hunger advocates to get information out on hunger programs and concerns
* Meet with congregations and clusters of congregations for hunger presentations
* Distribute educational resources and videos on the ELCA Hunger Appeal
* Distribute a periodic email newsletter to all hunger advocates/Contact: persons
* Encourage congregations to be involved with Stand With Africa, a three-year, second mile giving program to combat AIDS and hunger
* A recent synod wide project for World Hunger which raised $116,000.

Peace Not Walls

The Peace not Walls Task Force was created in 2007 by the Committee for Church in Society, one of the working arms of the Commission for Congregational Life of the Southwestern Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Peace not Walls Task Force was instituted in order to carry out the resolutions passed by the Synod Assembly in 2005 and 2006 regarding Israel and Palestine.

Poverty Task Force

The Synod’s Commission for Congregational Life created the PTF in 2007. The PTF goals are to create awareness and understanding of poverty, to influence public policy, and to promote self-sufficiency of communities.

Cherish Our Children Task Force

Cherish Our Children is a national community of Lutherans dedicated to preventing the sexual exploitation of children through prayer and action. It is a social ministry organization affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The School of Mission Team identifies various courses (and excellent instructors) that are of interest to lay persons in the synod. A conference or cluster of congregations determines what courses it wishes to sponsor, then contact’s the School of Mission Team.
Book of Faith Planning Team

The Book of Faith Initiative increases biblical literacy and fluency for the sake of the world. The ELCA has made a commitment to encourage all members of our congregations, from children to adults, to dig deeper into our book of faith, the Bible. The Book of Faith Initiative embraces a common vision in which all are invited to open scripture and join the conversation. The Southwestern Texas Synod is a Book of Faith Synod. We strongly encourage congregations to become involved with this initiative.

Shared Ministry Resource Team

The Shared Ministry Resource Team works to provide training and resources to congregations in the areas of gift identification and volunteer lay ministry. The team members are available for congregational training sessions, workshops, and resource development.

Older Adult Ministry Resource Team

This team helps congregations do effective ministry among older adults. The group provides networking and resources for parish nurses and supports an annual Senior Fest, an all day gathering for older adults.

Lutheran Men in Mission

The Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM) is affiliated with the churchwide men’s ministry. The synodical group has an annual assembly in February, regular mission projects, and supports men’s groups in congregations. The men’s board is eager to help congregations start or revitalize men’s ministry.
