Peace not Walls

PEACE NOT WALLS: STAND FOR JUSTICE IN THE HOLY LAND

WHO WE ARE    PEACE NOT WALLS CAMPAIGN
 WalkingByTheWall    DSCN0059
Here Peace not Walls Task Force member Carolyn Schneider is walking by the separation barrier in the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem. In 2005 she lived in Bethlehem for three months as a participant in the World Council of Churches' Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (www.eappi-us.org)  With her is Silje Hirsch, her teammate from Norway, and a young Palestinian boy. To accompany is to walk with someone, especially in the hard circumstances of their life.   This picture was taken in May, 2006, from the front of the Jacir Palace Intercontinental Hotel in Bethlehem, miles from the internationally recognized border of Israel. Since then, this wall marching through the streets of Bethlehem has been greatly extended. Where will it end?

Palestinian-owned homes and buildings are subject to being declared illegal and demolished by Israeli authorities, and the land then claimed for Israel. For more information on the issue of home demolitions, visit the website of the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions at http://www.icahd.org   An Israeli Soldier placing barbed wire along the fence at the end of the wall in East Jerusalem. Is this justice?

Lenten Resource for worship and reflection
 Beit Jala[1] (2)   DSCN0566
The children's choir in Sunday service at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation in Beit Jala.   Some walls serve a good purpose. This retaining wall is at the entrance to Mar Elias Educational Institutions, Ibillin, Galilee, established by the grace of God through the tireless efforts and undying faith of Abuna Elias Chacour, who is now Archbishop of Acco, Haifa, Nazareth, and all Galilee in the Melkite Church. Inlaid in the stones of the wall are the words that say "WELCOME" in English, Arabic and Hebrew. To learn more about the remarkable faith journey of Father Chacour and what one person can do to bring peace and justice to the Holy Land, request his books from the Southwestern Texas Synod Resource Center.
     HOW TO DONATE
Revelation in Ramallah   AVH mammo sign
When the book of Revelation is read as a frightening prediction of inevitable warfare, it can be used to squelch efforts for peace in the Middle East. Palestinian Christians see hope in Revelation instead. This window is from the Lutheran Church of Hope in Ramallah. It depicts Revelation 22:1-2, "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."   A visit to Augusta Victoria Hospital shows that health care needs are universal, as indicated by the sign for mammograms.
